Proximity to the house
If your shed houses infrequently used items then having it at opposite end of the garden to the house won’t be an issue. If, however, you need frequent access to it then closer to the house will be more convenient, especially in the winter months when days become shorter and rainier. Keeping it in view is also useful from a security perspective if you store valuable equipment in there. Remember to use padlocks and motion activated lights.
Boundaries
Not only could placing your shed right up against a garden fence annoy the neighbours but it could create a legal issue. If the eaves are over two and a half metres high then the shed usually can’t be placed within two metres of a property boundary. That said, you should always consult local planning regulations for your area.
Exposure
Any outdoor building will have to endure the Great British elements, which involve substantial amounts of wind and rain. It’s worth keeping a shed in a position with some shelter to minimise weather damage, particularly if it’s wood.
Surrounding shrubbery
Overhanging trees and hedges can prove problematic – not only could they obstruct entry to the shed but they could cause damage growing into the sides or windows.
Ground quality
Sounds simple but having a level, strong base is a must. A shed that leans or may start sinking won’t be helpful. Anywhere that may become waterlogged will also be problematic so check your drainage.
To sun or not to sun
If your shed is being used to propagate plants or it has window boxes, then you may want a position that is directly in the sun. Those used for work or food storage may become too hot so a shady spot could be better. If it’s a home office, then it’s worth investing in some basic lighting and heating to create a comfortable environment.
